Beefalo were first brought to Kentucky from California in the mid 1970's by Kenneth Riley of Mackville, Kentucky. Along with a few other early Beefalo breeders, he was instrumental in establishing the breed and getting it accepted by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture as a recognized beef breed. Beefalo have been shown at beef shows in Kentucky since the late 1970's and are a featured breed at the Kentucky Beef Expo Shows and Sales.

The Kentucky Bluegrass Beefalo Association was established in 1980.
