BISON-SPECIFIC TYPES FOR NEW BEEFALO DNA TEST

A new DNA test was developed at the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory for use in parentage verification and bison-specific markers (BSM) diagnosis. The information below is provided to help breeders understand and utilize the BSM report in breeding programs.

The new DNA test consists of assays for 19 DNA systems of which 18 are used for detection of bison-specific types in Beefalo. Five of these systems are common with the previous DNA test: BRR, ILSTS5, ILSTS8, INRA23, and TGLA227. The table below lists the 18 systems involved in the BSM diagnosis and the DNA types classified as bison-specific for each system.

The implementation of the new DNA test required modification in BRR and ILSTS5 that have changed the types identified as bison-specific. The numbers reported for BRR have increased by 2. The numbers reported for ILSTS5 have increased by 6. The "new" and "old" bison-specific types for these two systems are shown in the Table below. The database at the laboratory has been updated and these changes do not affect genetic analyses for parentage of BSM diagnosis.

As needed for parentage verification, DNA types for sires and dams whose samples are stored at the laboratory are updated to the new panel of systems and reports sent to the American Beefalo International.
